Narrative:
We departed columbus airport on a runway heading and climbed to 8000 ft as per our clearance. When we checked in with csg departure they gave us a heading to intercept the airway. When level at 8000 ft departure told us our assigned altitude was 7000 ft and gave us an immediate turn to the left to avoid traffic 2 mi ahead that was also at 8000 ft. We never received a clearance for 7000 ft on the initial contact and we believe this caused the conflict at 8000 ft.

Title: ALTDEV, POTENTIAL CONFLICT.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED COLUMBUS ARPT ON A RWY HDG AND CLBED TO 8000 FT AS PER OUR CLRNC. WHEN WE CHKED IN WITH CSG DEP THEY GAVE US A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE AIRWAY. WHEN LEVEL AT 8000 FT DEP TOLD US OUR ASSIGNED ALT WAS 7000 FT AND GAVE US AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO THE L TO AVOID TFC 2 MI AHEAD THAT WAS ALSO AT 8000 FT. WE NEVER RECEIVED A CLRNC FOR 7000 FT ON THE INITIAL CONTACT AND WE BELIEVE THIS CAUSED THE CONFLICT AT 8000 FT.
