Narrative:

On taxi out to runway 2L for takeoff, flight was cleared to cross runway 31, via L3 taxiway. Just as we began to cross 31, I saw a single engine aircraft landing on 31. We stopped short of 31 as light aircraft rolled through (L3) our position. It is my opinion that, if we had continued to cross 31 as directed, we would have had a collision with light aircraft. After landing in (mem), I called bna control tower. They said that it was a communication mix-up and that they were sorry. The ground controller was not aware of landing traffic on 31. Controller error. Supplemental information from acn 238830: the captain stated that he would not have seen the other airplane had he (other aircraft) not had his landing light on.
