Narrative:
Prior to departure flight mechanic reported velcro girtbar retainer straps for forward entrance door escape slide would not attach to escape slide. Needed an escape slide replacement to correct write-up. Only slide available was a slide removed from another airplane on a previous 'B' check. Due date reported to me was apr/93. I allowed installation of slide with a deferred item to replace slide at or before apr 30, '93. After installation of slide and departure of trip it was reported by installing mechanic that due date label read apr 1, '93 -- slide was replaced at termination of trip. Poor communication. I failed to ask if date was present in addition to month and yr. But installing mechanic did not volunteer the date, just apr/xx/90 plus 36 months. All references have been removed from the maintenance manual and check instructions regarding slide replacement due date.
