Narrative:
During cruise at FL330, 75 mi south of spa VOR, TCASII voice announced traffic, followed by descend, traffic, descend. Began descent, traffic observed on TCASII at 1-2 O'clock and 2 mi (red square plus 1400 ft) and plus 1400 ft. TCASII said monitor vertical speed and we leveled at 32400 ft. Advised ZTL on the RA and returned to FL330. Atl advised us that there was no traffic above us in that direction, only traffic at 2 O'clock at FL290 which was visually observed and traffic at 10 O'clock and FL350. We did not visually spot the traffic giving us the RA. May have been a false advisory. TCASII did not announce clear of conflict as it is supposed to do. TCASII appeared to work normally the rest of the flight. Performed TCASII test again and passed the test. ZTL said there was no traffic in that area. Filed TCASII incident form with the company.
