Narrative:
On takeoff on runway 28 at bwi we climbed straight out and awaited for a vector from departure control. After receiving a heading the controller asked if we were on the swann 1 SID. Before engine start we received our clearance on ACARS pre-departure clearance. It read: (bwi to bos). Bwi SWANN1 ood J42 rbv. J222 jfk raalf 2 bos. This is the route description. There was no further mention of SWANN1. We did not see the '1' after swann. Perhaps a space between 'swann' and '1' would have been more effective. Also, SWANN1 doesn't belong in the route of flight because we were going over swann intersection (it isn't SWANN1 intersection). Supplemental information from acn 242302: a good corrective action would be to standardize pre-departure clearance messages and to spell out all SID's, some place other than the route section or if it must be in route section add the word departure, i.e., 'bwi swann 1 departure swann ood etc.' also, leave a space after the word 'SWANN1' example 'swann 1.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG DID NOT FLY THE SID HDG AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: ON TKOF ON RWY 28 AT BWI WE CLBED STRAIGHT OUT AND AWAITED FOR A VECTOR FROM DEP CTL. AFTER RECEIVING A HDG THE CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE ON THE SWANN 1 SID. BEFORE ENG START WE RECEIVED OUR CLRNC ON ACARS PRE-DEP CLRNC. IT READ: (BWI TO BOS). BWI SWANN1 OOD J42 RBV. J222 JFK RAALF 2 BOS. THIS IS THE RTE DESCRIPTION. THERE WAS NO FURTHER MENTION OF SWANN1. WE DID NOT SEE THE '1' AFTER SWANN. PERHAPS A SPACE BTWN 'SWANN' AND '1' WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE EFFECTIVE. ALSO, SWANN1 DOESN'T BELONG IN THE RTE OF FLT BECAUSE WE WERE GOING OVER SWANN INTXN (IT ISN'T SWANN1 INTXN). SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 242302: A GOOD CORRECTIVE ACTION WOULD BE TO STANDARDIZE PRE-DEP CLRNC MESSAGES AND TO SPELL OUT ALL SID'S, SOME PLACE OTHER THAN THE RTE SECTION OR IF IT MUST BE IN RTE SECTION ADD THE WORD DEP, I.E., 'BWI SWANN 1 DEP SWANN OOD ETC.' ALSO, LEAVE A SPACE AFTER THE WORD 'SWANN1' EXAMPLE 'SWANN 1.'
