Narrative:
During departure got a TCASII TA off to our left, 500 ft above us. Quickly idented traffic and told first officer to climb to the right. As I told first officer to climb (increase) and turn, controller said 'level off.' I missed that call and first officer continued to climb and turn right. The turn was slight and we never got off the departure routing or altitude parameters. The traffic was a VFR small aircraft at 8500 ft being controled by ont departure control.
