Narrative:
Air carrier X cleared for a visual approach to runway 27L 6 NM east of airport. Air carrier Y was cleared for visual approach to runway 27L 8 1/2 NM east of airport. Air carrier Y overtook air carrier X approximately 5 NM east of airport. Ord local control climbed and turned air carrier Y out to the south. I believed this occurred because I did not instruct air carrier Y to follow air carrier X.
