Narrative:
Air carrier X requested taxi to runway 26. Aircraft was told to 'pass behind an small aircraft passing right to left, via taxiway D, hold short of runway 31.' air carrier X replied 'we'll do it.' air carrier X blew by hold line, ground control alerted the jet stream to hold as small aircraft Y was departing on takeoff roll. Pilots of both aircraft didn't see each other. Supplemental information from acn 246140: air carrier X would have crossed hold line if ATC did not reissue hold short of runway clearance. The airport was a bit busy this day. When we received our taxi clearance we thought we were cleared to runway 26 at lancaster, but actually we were instructed to hold short of runway 31. ATC (ground) saw us approaching the hold line and instructed to 'hold, hold short.' we did, but not before our nose gear crossed the hold line. Mains did not cross the line, no problems or incident followed. The hold line and this intersection is a good 75-100 ft away from the runways. It was a good call on the part of the ATC controller. When we received the clearance, for some reason we did not read back the hold short part of the clearance. Ground should have verified that we did in fact receive this and understand the clearance. In our mind, we were cleared all the way to runway 26. We do this trip 100 times a month. Complacency and routine was the varying factor in the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTION TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY HAD LTSS FROM SMA Y RWY INCURSION.
Narrative: ACR X REQUESTED TAXI TO RWY 26. ACFT WAS TOLD TO 'PASS BEHIND AN SMA PASSING R TO L, VIA TXWY D, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 31.' ACR X REPLIED 'WE'LL DO IT.' ACR X BLEW BY HOLD LINE, GND CTL ALERTED THE JET STREAM TO HOLD AS SMA Y WAS DEPARTING ON TKOF ROLL. PLTS OF BOTH ACFT DIDN'T SEE EACH OTHER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 246140: ACR X WOULD HAVE CROSSED HOLD LINE IF ATC DID NOT REISSUE HOLD SHORT OF RWY CLRNC. THE ARPT WAS A BIT BUSY THIS DAY. WHEN WE RECEIVED OUR TAXI CLRNC WE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO RWY 26 AT LANCASTER, BUT ACTUALLY WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 31. ATC (GND) SAW US APCHING THE HOLD LINE AND INSTRUCTED TO 'HOLD, HOLD SHORT.' WE DID, BUT NOT BEFORE OUR NOSE GEAR CROSSED THE HOLD LINE. MAINS DID NOT CROSS THE LINE, NO PROBS OR INCIDENT FOLLOWED. THE HOLD LINE AND THIS INTXN IS A GOOD 75-100 FT AWAY FROM THE RWYS. IT WAS A GOOD CALL ON THE PART OF THE ATC CTLR. WHEN WE RECEIVED THE CLRNC, FOR SOME REASON WE DID NOT READ BACK THE HOLD SHORT PART OF THE CLRNC. GND SHOULD HAVE VERIFIED THAT WE DID IN FACT RECEIVE THIS AND UNDERSTAND THE CLRNC. IN OUR MIND, WE WERE CLRED ALL THE WAY TO RWY 26. WE DO THIS TRIP 100 TIMES A MONTH. COMPLACENCY AND ROUTINE WAS THE VARYING FACTOR IN THE INCIDENT.
