Narrative:
Left hpn off runway 16. Right turnout for wward flight. Climbed to 2500 ft (reached at tappenzee bridge), heading for nynak intersection. Called new york on 126.4. Requested direct broadway, and an altitude of 5500 ft. (I realized a little later that I had requested an incorrect altitude.) we were given a discrete code. A few moments later we were told we could climb to 5500 ft and proceed on course. We responded we were climbing out of 2500 ft to 5500 ft and direct bwz. We were given new york on 120.55 shortly thereafter. We called 120.55 and reported we were at about 3500 ft climbing to 5500 ft. New york told us to remain clear of the TCA. We were by that time in the TCA. We told him we were in the TCA and had been cleared by the previous controller. We were told again that we were to remain clear of the TCA. We then asked him what he would like us to do. New york told us that we were only about a mi inside the TCA and to turn right to exit, which we did.

Narrative: LEFT HPN OFF RWY 16. R TURNOUT FOR WWARD FLT. CLBED TO 2500 FT (REACHED AT TAPPENZEE BRIDGE), HDG FOR NYNAK INTXN. CALLED NEW YORK ON 126.4. REQUESTED DIRECT BROADWAY, AND AN ALT OF 5500 FT. (I REALIZED A LITTLE LATER THAT I HAD REQUESTED AN INCORRECT ALT.) WE WERE GIVEN A DISCRETE CODE. A FEW MOMENTS LATER WE WERE TOLD WE COULD CLB TO 5500 FT AND PROCEED ON COURSE. WE RESPONDED WE WERE CLBING OUT OF 2500 FT TO 5500 FT AND DIRECT BWZ. WE WERE GIVEN NEW YORK ON 120.55 SHORTLY THEREAFTER. WE CALLED 120.55 AND RPTED WE WERE AT ABOUT 3500 FT CLBING TO 5500 FT. NEW YORK TOLD US TO REMAIN CLR OF THE TCA. WE WERE BY THAT TIME IN THE TCA. WE TOLD HIM WE WERE IN THE TCA AND HAD BEEN CLRED BY THE PREVIOUS CTLR. WE WERE TOLD AGAIN THAT WE WERE TO REMAIN CLR OF THE TCA. WE THEN ASKED HIM WHAT HE WOULD LIKE US TO DO. NEW YORK TOLD US THAT WE WERE ONLY ABOUT A MI INSIDE THE TCA AND TO TURN R TO EXIT, WHICH WE DID.
