Narrative:

During preflight inspection, left fuel cap was not secured. During flight, the fuel cap worked itself loose and became disattached. Fuel was then siphoned out by passing air and gave erroneous fuel quantity and fuel consumption indications. At the time of engine failure, I notified akron/canton approach, advised them of the problem and that I had a field to land in and that there would be no problem. The owner of the land was notified and consent was given to fly the plane out. The next morning I filled the plane with fuel and uneventfully flew the airplane out.
