Narrative:
On jul/sat/93, I filed an IFR flight plan via duats. Departing columbus, in (bak), shb, V221, fwa, V11, cruxx, V10, crl destination big beaver airport (3BB) in troy, mi. During this duats session I also received current WX observations and terminal forecast for my route of flight. 30 mins prior to my departure I called FSS and received a standard briefing. My 9 yr old passenger and myself departed bak at XA30Z. Local conditions were E10 overcast 3F. After takeoff we were handed off to ind departure and climbed to 7000 ft. Departure control handed us off to ZID after we were north of shb. By the time we were to mie there was only an occasional scattered layer between us and the ground. At the fwa VOR, I turned to fly out on V11, the airport was clearly visible. At about 30 DME out from fwa, I had realized that I hadn't had any recent communication with ZID. I tried to contact them at this time. I could hear airborne communications but was not able to receive any communication from ZID. At this time I called ZOB on 134.65. They gave me a new transponder code and handed me to toledo approach, who eventually handed me to detroit. After dropping off my passenger I called the lansing FSS to file my return flight plan. It was during this call that I first heard of the NOTAM involving an air show at fwa. On sunday I received a call from the inspector of the south bend FSDO. He was the attending FAA representative at the ft. Wayne air show. He informed me that during my radio silence I had flown through restr airspace. I had not caused any direct conflict with acts due to their tracking me on radar and my flight plan showing my intentions to fly through their airspace. They did, however, have to delay the launch of a military jet demonstration until my passage. Mr. X believes that I properly acknowledged a handoff from ZID to fwa approach, but failed to report in on the fwa frequency. He said both agencies tried to raise me but were unable. I have not heard the tapes of radio communications. My normal procedure would be to dial in a new frequency as I accept a handoff, then make that radio active. When I noticed that I was out of communication I was still on ZID frequency (not sure on the other radio setting). I did have a young passenger that I was spending a lot of time answering questions for since he was unfamiliar with flying. This may have distracted me or caused me to do things out of sequence.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL ACFT INADVERTENTLY FLEW THROUGH A TEMPORARY RESTR AIRSPACE FOR AN AIRSHOW DURING AN IFR FLT.
Narrative: ON JUL/SAT/93, I FILED AN IFR FLT PLAN VIA DUATS. DEPARTING COLUMBUS, IN (BAK), SHB, V221, FWA, V11, CRUXX, V10, CRL DEST BIG BEAVER ARPT (3BB) IN TROY, MI. DURING THIS DUATS SESSION I ALSO RECEIVED CURRENT WX OBSERVATIONS AND TERMINAL FORECAST FOR MY RTE OF FLT. 30 MINS PRIOR TO MY DEP I CALLED FSS AND RECEIVED A STANDARD BRIEFING. MY 9 YR OLD PAX AND MYSELF DEPARTED BAK AT XA30Z. LCL CONDITIONS WERE E10 OVCST 3F. AFTER TKOF WE WERE HANDED OFF TO IND DEP AND CLBED TO 7000 FT. DEP CTL HANDED US OFF TO ZID AFTER WE WERE N OF SHB. BY THE TIME WE WERE TO MIE THERE WAS ONLY AN OCCASIONAL SCATTERED LAYER BTWN US AND THE GND. AT THE FWA VOR, I TURNED TO FLY OUT ON V11, THE ARPT WAS CLEARLY VISIBLE. AT ABOUT 30 DME OUT FROM FWA, I HAD REALIZED THAT I HADN'T HAD ANY RECENT COM WITH ZID. I TRIED TO CONTACT THEM AT THIS TIME. I COULD HEAR AIRBORNE COMS BUT WAS NOT ABLE TO RECEIVE ANY COM FROM ZID. AT THIS TIME I CALLED ZOB ON 134.65. THEY GAVE ME A NEW XPONDER CODE AND HANDED ME TO TOLEDO APCH, WHO EVENTUALLY HANDED ME TO DETROIT. AFTER DROPPING OFF MY PAX I CALLED THE LANSING FSS TO FILE MY RETURN FLT PLAN. I HAD NOT CAUSED ANY DIRECT CONFLICT WITH ACTS DUE TO THEIR TRACKING ME ON RADAR AND MY FLT PLAN SHOWING MY INTENTIONS TO FLY THROUGH THEIR AIRSPACE. THEY DID, HOWEVER, HAVE TO DELAY THE LAUNCH OF A MIL JET DEMONSTRATION UNTIL MY PASSAGE. MR. X BELIEVES THAT I PROPERLY ACKNOWLEDGED A HDOF FROM ZID TO FWA APCH, BUT FAILED TO RPT IN ON THE FWA FREQ. HE SAID BOTH AGENCIES TRIED TO RAISE ME BUT WERE UNABLE. I HAVE NOT HEARD THE TAPES OF RADIO COMS. MY NORMAL PROC WOULD BE TO DIAL IN A NEW FREQ AS I ACCEPT A HDOF, THEN MAKE THAT RADIO ACTIVE. WHEN I NOTICED THAT I WAS OUT OF COM I WAS STILL ON ZID FREQ (NOT SURE ON THE OTHER RADIO SETTING). I DID HAVE A YOUNG PAX THAT I WAS SPENDING A LOT OF TIME ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOR SINCE HE WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH FLYING. THIS MAY HAVE DISTRACTED ME OR CAUSED ME TO DO THINGS OUT OF SEQUENCE.
