Narrative:
Upon approach, ATC advised us to descend to 3000 ft (from 6000 ft) and upon reaching 3000 ft, slow to 210 KTS (from 250 KTS). We observed traffic ahead of us on TCASII above us, descending, and at a range of 4 mi. Passing 4000 ft, we received a TCASII RA showing a required climb of 3500 FPM. We complied with RA and initiated a climb. At 5000 ft, RA was cancelled with a 'monitor vertical speed' advisory. ATC advised us they had no conflict with separation of traffic. Supplemental information from acn 248633: I believe the original vectoring did not work out quite as well as the controller planned, and it was good to have a TCASII backup.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG ACFT CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII COMMAND.
Narrative: UPON APCH, ATC ADVISED US TO DSND TO 3000 FT (FROM 6000 FT) AND UPON REACHING 3000 FT, SLOW TO 210 KTS (FROM 250 KTS). WE OBSERVED TFC AHEAD OF US ON TCASII ABOVE US, DSNDING, AND AT A RANGE OF 4 MI. PASSING 4000 FT, WE RECEIVED A TCASII RA SHOWING A REQUIRED CLB OF 3500 FPM. WE COMPLIED WITH RA AND INITIATED A CLB. AT 5000 FT, RA WAS CANCELLED WITH A 'MONITOR VERT SPD' ADVISORY. ATC ADVISED US THEY HAD NO CONFLICT WITH SEPARATION OF TFC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 248633: I BELIEVE THE ORIGINAL VECTORING DID NOT WORK OUT QUITE AS WELL AS THE CTLR PLANNED, AND IT WAS GOOD TO HAVE A TCASII BACKUP.
