Narrative:
At cruise, level at FL390, N1 on the #1 (left) engine decreased rapidly while the respective itt rose significantly. After those indications, the captain called for engine shutdown and to advise ATC of our problem. When I notified ATC, I asked for the nearest airport and its distance. I was asked if I wanted to declare an emergency, but at the captain's request, I replied with a negative answer. ATC cleared us to FL240 then asked if we wanted a clearance to medford. After reviewing the airport facilities for appropriate runway length and lighting, I accepted a direct clearance to medford. Clearance down to 10000 ft and for the visual runway 32 was given and accepted. When communicating with medford tower, I requested to have rescue standing by. The landing was made without any problems. Though I never requested an emergency priority, ATC was able to give us an immediate descent and clearance to an airport.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CPR MDT LOST AN ENG.
Narrative: AT CRUISE, LEVEL AT FL390, N1 ON THE #1 (L) ENG DECREASED RAPIDLY WHILE THE RESPECTIVE ITT ROSE SIGNIFICANTLY. AFTER THOSE INDICATIONS, THE CAPT CALLED FOR ENG SHUTDOWN AND TO ADVISE ATC OF OUR PROB. WHEN I NOTIFIED ATC, I ASKED FOR THE NEAREST ARPT AND ITS DISTANCE. I WAS ASKED IF I WANTED TO DECLARE AN EMER, BUT AT THE CAPT'S REQUEST, I REPLIED WITH A NEGATIVE ANSWER. ATC CLRED US TO FL240 THEN ASKED IF WE WANTED A CLRNC TO MEDFORD. AFTER REVIEWING THE ARPT FACILITIES FOR APPROPRIATE RWY LENGTH AND LIGHTING, I ACCEPTED A DIRECT CLRNC TO MEDFORD. CLRNC DOWN TO 10000 FT AND FOR THE VISUAL RWY 32 WAS GIVEN AND ACCEPTED. WHEN COMMUNICATING WITH MEDFORD TWR, I REQUESTED TO HAVE RESCUE STANDING BY. THE LNDG WAS MADE WITHOUT ANY PROBS. THOUGH I NEVER REQUESTED AN EMER PRIORITY, ATC WAS ABLE TO GIVE US AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT AND CLRNC TO AN ARPT.
