Narrative:
The purpose of this flight was to check out for rental purposes. Our aircraft was cleared to taxi to runway 16 at bvy. Being that I was new to the airport, I asked the CFI conducting the chkout for a progressive taxi. While crossing a runway on the taxi route I asked the CFI which runway were we crossing. He replied that it was runway 16, which was the active at the time. There wasn't a conflict with any other traffic. According to the CFI this was the standard taxi procedure at this airport. In the ensuing conversation I explained to the CFI how this action is not only unsafe, but also against procedures listed in the aim. A side note about this flight. Normally I fly a cpr jet approximately 60 hours a month. Any person who is flying a non complex aircraft or single pilot after flying in a high performance aircraft should be extra cautious, even if he has flown this type aircraft in the past.
