Narrative:

I was proceeding sebound on V-27 at 11000 ft on an IFR flight plan in VFR conditions (over the top of the WX). Approaching eni VOR, the tops began to build rapidly to the south, so I informed center that I needed a turn of 180 degrees and a clearance back to my departure airport, acv. I was told to stand by, but could not wait for the clearance due to the WX approaching. I then received my clearance back to acv on V-27 at 10000 ft and informed center that I had already started my 180 degree turn back towards aircraft. I felt the WX changed dramatically, and I was forced to start my turn without a clearance so as to avoid entering IMC with freezing levels at 4000 ft and an outside air temperature of 12 degrees F at my altitude of 11000 ft MSL. With 4 passenger and a heavy single engine aircraft, I did not want to enter the clouds/moisture and raise the possibility of icing up over the mountains.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL PVT ACFT ON AN IFR FLT PLAN, VFR ON TOP, MADE A 180 DEG TURN BECAUSE APCHING WX PRIOR TO RECEIVING A CLRNC.

Narrative: I WAS PROCEEDING SEBOUND ON V-27 AT 11000 FT ON AN IFR FLT PLAN IN VFR CONDITIONS (OVER THE TOP OF THE WX). APCHING ENI VOR, THE TOPS BEGAN TO BUILD RAPIDLY TO THE S, SO I INFORMED CTR THAT I NEEDED A TURN OF 180 DEGS AND A CLRNC BACK TO MY DEP ARPT, ACV. I WAS TOLD TO STAND BY, BUT COULD NOT WAIT FOR THE CLRNC DUE TO THE WX APCHING. I THEN RECEIVED MY CLRNC BACK TO ACV ON V-27 AT 10000 FT AND INFORMED CTR THAT I HAD ALREADY STARTED MY 180 DEG TURN BACK TOWARDS ACFT. I FELT THE WX CHANGED DRAMATICALLY, AND I WAS FORCED TO START MY TURN WITHOUT A CLRNC SO AS TO AVOID ENTERING IMC WITH FREEZING LEVELS AT 4000 FT AND AN OUTSIDE AIR TEMP OF 12 DEGS F AT MY ALT OF 11000 FT MSL. WITH 4 PAX AND A HVY SINGLE ENG ACFT, I DID NOT WANT TO ENTER THE CLOUDS/MOISTURE AND RAISE THE POSSIBILITY OF ICING UP OVER THE MOUNTAINS.
