Narrative:
On takeoff from ama, another airline crew reported that we had lost a main wheel during takeoff. Takeoff and gear retraction seemed normal. Ama operations found and confirmed it was a main wheel and tire assembly. Continued to dfw and declared emergency. Told ATC we planned to land and stop on runway and have fire department check landing gear for any sign of fire and then be towed to gate. Briefed flight attendants and they went through appropriate checklists. Landing was uneventful. Fire department confirmed that #4 wheel and tire assembly were missing. No word yet on what failed to cause wheel to come off, but this would certainly point to defective hardware and/or maintenance procedure.
