Narrative:
I was cleared from the northwest corner to taxi to runway 06 for departure on that runway. At the hold line I was stationary for my run-up. Upon completing my run-up, I switched to the tower frequency for takeoff clearance and was cleared to taxi into position and hold on runway 06. Without any warning, the other aircraft coming from the other side of the runway, crossing the runway at good speed, collided with the left front of my aircraft. I had at that time not begun my taxi on to the runway. It was not possible to take evasive action in the time frame, and the other pilot had not seen me (limited forward vision in a taildragger). I was head down checking my gauges, and by the time I saw the other aircraft coming towards me the collision was imminent. The other pilot had not cleared his way visually, and had not been advised by ground control of my position. I had switched to the tower frequency, and had not heard any taxi clearance being issued to the other aircraft to cross the runway. Had the other pilot made clearing turns during taxi, he would have seen me, and had the ground controller advised him of my presence, there would not have been any problems.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GND COLLISION BTWN 2 LIGHT ACFT AT SPG.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FROM THE NW CORNER TO TAXI TO RWY 06 FOR DEP ON THAT RWY. AT THE HOLD LINE I WAS STATIONARY FOR MY RUN-UP. UPON COMPLETING MY RUN-UP, I SWITCHED TO THE TWR FREQ FOR TKOF CLRNC AND WAS CLRED TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 06. WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE OTHER ACFT COMING FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RWY, XING THE RWY AT GOOD SPD, COLLIDED WITH THE L FRONT OF MY ACFT. I HAD AT THAT TIME NOT BEGUN MY TAXI ON TO THE RWY. IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION IN THE TIME FRAME, AND THE OTHER PLT HAD NOT SEEN ME (LIMITED FORWARD VISION IN A TAILDRAGGER). I WAS HEAD DOWN CHKING MY GAUGES, AND BY THE TIME I SAW THE OTHER ACFT COMING TOWARDS ME THE COLLISION WAS IMMINENT. THE OTHER PLT HAD NOT CLRED HIS WAY VISUALLY, AND HAD NOT BEEN ADVISED BY GND CTL OF MY POS. I HAD SWITCHED TO THE TWR FREQ, AND HAD NOT HEARD ANY TAXI CLRNC BEING ISSUED TO THE OTHER ACFT TO CROSS THE RWY. HAD THE OTHER PLT MADE CLRING TURNS DURING TAXI, HE WOULD HAVE SEEN ME, AND HAD THE GND CTLR ADVISED HIM OF MY PRESENCE, THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANY PROBS.
