Narrative:
Shortly before level off, received an engine malfunction message on ECAM. Company was consulted and a decision was made to return to msp. An emergency was declared, spoilers were used on descent and level offs (before the approach) to reduce weight as much as possible (no fuel dump system). An overweight landing was accomplished uneventfully. All applicable checklists and procedures were followed.
