Narrative:
During FAA inspection subsequent to an accident the ELT battery was found to be out-of-date. It had been installed mar/4/92, and was marked to be replaced on or before 'dec 93.' I failed to track this expiration date. I am setting up a database to help keep track of such information -- i.e., night currency, 90 day landing currency, propeller overhaul airworthiness directive date, transponder static date, etc. I had performed a 3 sweep test of the ELT about 1.5 hours prior to flight on apr/94 and did not note the expiration date! I have learned, and will be more attentive to such items as this battery expiration. Date check will now be added to the preflight checklist.
