Narrative:
An instrument instructor chkride was in progress. The applicant was holding at ginna intersection at 6500 MSL. We were under radar following with a discrete squawk on 134.2. The applicant was at 6300 ft and an aircraft came over the top of us from our 7 O'clock position. It was at 6500 ft. If we were on our target altitude holding east of ginna we would have been wiped out. Upon calling the controller at burbank by telephone we were told it was an MU2 who was just handed over from center to approach. He was en route to oxnard airport. He was descending at 6000 FPM and going 245 KTS. It was VFR. There was no way that we could have seen this as he was approaching from our 6 to 7 O'clock position. The MU2 said on the second call up from burbank that he had the cessna 172 in sight. My feeling is that if he had us in sight he would have taken evasive action so as to avoid us by a larger margin.
