Narrative:
Charleston AFB international (chs) on ramp at FBO. I was cleared to taxi to runway 33. I asked twice for progressive taxi with little help. The controllers seemed busy. The taxi signs confused me. I entered what I thought was a very wide taxiway. ATC told me I went over the line. Hence, I thought I was on 33 runway. I did the run-ups and contacted the tower. They gave me clearance for takeoff. After liftoff, I saw a truck on the runway. I cleared the truck by 50-100 ft easily. Tower notified me I had taken off on a taxiway. I realized the error. On the way to greensboro, ATC told me to call ATC at chs. An FAA official met me at gso. Mr. X suggested that I insist on more ATC help. He also suggested that I get a better diagram of the airport and its txwys. I was using the us terminal procedures manual. I was treated very well and learned a lot from mr. X. I also talked with controller of ATC and chs about the incident. I realize I need to do more careful taxi airport study.
