Narrative:
A CFI an I were holding on taxiway charley for a departure using the full length of runway 4R in honolulu international airport. We were in a cessna 150 waiting for an air carrier 737 to land. The CFI was in the left seat and operating the radios. I was accompanying CFI that friday of may morning on a fish spotting flight. After the 737 passed by, CFI asked if I wanted to do the takeoff. I was in an unfamiliar taxiway, but told him that I would like to and so we agreed on that. I cannot recall the exact dialogue between our aircraft and the tower before the takeoff, but I believe this is what was said after the air carrier 737 had landed. Tower: cessna, taxi, position and hold runway 4R, caution wake turbulence. CFI: cessna, position and hold runway 4R. While the CFI was talking with the tower, I maneuvered the aircraft onto the runway and went through the before takeoff checklist. I then began the takeoff roll. When we were airborne, tower told us that we had not been cleared for takeoff. Even though I was not talking on the radio, I should have paid more attention to our situation. I'm used to hearing from tower 'cleared for takeoff, caution wake turbulence.' I am not used to hearing 'position and hold, caution wake turbulence.' I misheard our message as a takeoff clearance, caution wake turbulence. Another mistake on my part was conducting the before takeoff checklist while CFI communicated with tower. This combined with complacency from knowing I was flying with a CFI, and poor cockpit resource management contributed to my deviation. Supplemental information from acn 271171: I agreed to participate in a flight with a commercial pilot. Taxied the aircraft to taxiway 4 right full length. At this point I told the other pilot that have the flight controls and the airplane, at this point other pilot was the PIC of the aircraft. Proceeded to runway and began takeoff departure. Other pilot called the tower when on the ground and the tower stated that they wanted to know who had the controls of the aircraft, other pilot stated that he had the flight controls on the departure. The tower then stated that all they need is his address because he was flying the airplane when the incident occurred. I was not the PIC in the aircraft at the time of the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C-150 PERFORMS AN UNAUTH TKOF.
Narrative: A CFI AN I WERE HOLDING ON TXWY CHARLEY FOR A DEP USING THE FULL LENGTH OF RWY 4R IN HONOLULU INTL ARPT. WE WERE IN A CESSNA 150 WAITING FOR AN ACR 737 TO LAND. THE CFI WAS IN THE L SEAT AND OPERATING THE RADIOS. I WAS ACCOMPANYING CFI THAT FRIDAY OF MAY MORNING ON A FISH SPOTTING FLT. AFTER THE 737 PASSED BY, CFI ASKED IF I WANTED TO DO THE TKOF. I WAS IN AN UNFAMILIAR TXWY, BUT TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD LIKE TO AND SO WE AGREED ON THAT. I CANNOT RECALL THE EXACT DIALOGUE BTWN OUR ACFT AND THE TWR BEFORE THE TKOF, BUT I BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT WAS SAID AFTER THE ACR 737 HAD LANDED. TWR: CESSNA, TAXI, POS AND HOLD RWY 4R, CAUTION WAKE TURB. CFI: CESSNA, POS AND HOLD RWY 4R. WHILE THE CFI WAS TALKING WITH THE TWR, I MANEUVERED THE ACFT ONTO THE RWY AND WENT THROUGH THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST. I THEN BEGAN THE TKOF ROLL. WHEN WE WERE AIRBORNE, TWR TOLD US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED FOR TKOF. EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT TALKING ON THE RADIO, I SHOULD HAVE PAID MORE ATTN TO OUR SIT. I'M USED TO HEARING FROM TWR 'CLRED FOR TKOF, CAUTION WAKE TURB.' I AM NOT USED TO HEARING 'POS AND HOLD, CAUTION WAKE TURB.' I MISHEARD OUR MESSAGE AS A TKOF CLRNC, CAUTION WAKE TURB. ANOTHER MISTAKE ON MY PART WAS CONDUCTING THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST WHILE CFI COMMUNICATED WITH TWR. THIS COMBINED WITH COMPLACENCY FROM KNOWING I WAS FLYING WITH A CFI, AND POOR COCKPIT RESOURCE MGMNT CONTRIBUTED TO MY DEV. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 271171: I AGREED TO PARTICIPATE IN A FLT WITH A COMMERCIAL PLT. TAXIED THE ACFT TO TXWY 4 R FULL LENGTH. AT THIS POINT I TOLD THE OTHER PLT THAT HAVE THE FLT CTLS AND THE AIRPLANE, AT THIS POINT OTHER PLT WAS THE PIC OF THE ACFT. PROCEEDED TO RWY AND BEGAN TKOF DEP. OTHER PLT CALLED THE TWR WHEN ON THE GND AND THE TWR STATED THAT THEY WANTED TO KNOW WHO HAD THE CTLS OF THE ACFT, OTHER PLT STATED THAT HE HAD THE FLT CTLS ON THE DEP. THE TWR THEN STATED THAT ALL THEY NEED IS HIS ADDRESS BECAUSE HE WAS FLYING THE AIRPLANE WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. I WAS NOT THE PIC IN THE ACFT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT.
