Narrative:
I had preflted, taxied, and run the engine up. I didn't notice anything wrong so I called on CTAF and proceeded to takeoff. At about 100 ft AGL I smelled fumes, at 200 ft AGL I saw smoke, at 300 ft AGL I banked the nose 45 degrees, turned back to the airport, paralleled the runway and made an emergency landing. Initially I thought it was an electrical fire so I pulled the master switch off. I realized this was not the problem so I turned it back on and called on CTAF announcing my emergency landing. I landed safely, and nothing was damaged, and no one was hurt. I determined that the fire was a result of a bird's nest that had been removed. When the owner removed the nest, some pieces had become lodged between the cylinders. These papers and straw caught fire causing the occurrence. I was unable to recognize this situation during preflight since I couldn't see or feel these articles. I do not see this as an extremely serious situation, but I have filed this report since the owner is reporting this to the NTSB.

I WAS UNABLE TO RECOGNIZE THIS SIT DURING PREFLT SINCE I COULDN'T SEE OR FEEL THESE ARTICLES. I DO NOT SEE THIS AS AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS SIT, BUT I HAVE FILED THIS RPT SINCE THE OWNER IS RPTING THIS TO THE NTSB.
