Narrative:
Approach control had cleared us for a visual approach to runway 35R at dfw after stating, 'good rate down to 3000 ft, traffic is a dc-9 that will cross over you for runway 36L...contact tower.' we had been restr to 6000 ft until on a 7 1/2 mi base leg (too high) and were descending at 2100 FPM to comply with the 'good rate down' instructions. We had visual contact with the dc-9 and he saw us. It was co-altitude and about 2000 ft out at 3 O'clock, nose at us, when TCASII RA gave climb command. We complied as the dc-9 turned left to maneuver behind us. Nearest it came was about 1500 ft. This situation could be avoided by approach control giving you an idea of the length of your final, i.e., 8 mi etc. Descent rates could be planned and the potential for the conflict would be reduced.

Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT DURING APCH PROC.
Narrative: APCH CTL HAD CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 35R AT DFW AFTER STATING, 'GOOD RATE DOWN TO 3000 FT, TFC IS A DC-9 THAT WILL CROSS OVER YOU FOR RWY 36L...CONTACT TWR.' WE HAD BEEN RESTR TO 6000 FT UNTIL ON A 7 1/2 MI BASE LEG (TOO HIGH) AND WERE DSNDING AT 2100 FPM TO COMPLY WITH THE 'GOOD RATE DOWN' INSTRUCTIONS. WE HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE DC-9 AND HE SAW US. IT WAS CO-ALT AND ABOUT 2000 FT OUT AT 3 O'CLOCK, NOSE AT US, WHEN TCASII RA GAVE CLB COMMAND. WE COMPLIED AS THE DC-9 TURNED L TO MANEUVER BEHIND US. NEAREST IT CAME WAS ABOUT 1500 FT. THIS SIT COULD BE AVOIDED BY APCH CTL GIVING YOU AN IDEA OF THE LENGTH OF YOUR FINAL, I.E., 8 MI ETC. DSCNT RATES COULD BE PLANNED AND THE POTENTIAL FOR THE CONFLICT WOULD BE REDUCED.
