Narrative:
On preflight, I noted in the logbook that the previous flight had the 'gear doors' EICAS message and 'door' light written up and cleared by aircraft maintenance. I carefully looked at each gear and saw no abnormalities. After takeoff on my call of 'position rate,' first officer called 'gear up' -- everything was normal except the 'gear doors' EICAS message displayed and light 'doors' illuminated, we cycled the gear and the problem remained. With all checklists complete, we requested a hold at abb VOR where I called company. After consulting maintenance, we were given an 'artr' to return to sdf. The flight proceeded to landing without incident.
