Narrative:
Aircraft was in holding pattern at bitty intersection left turn due to thunderstorms in area. Aircraft was vectored south and turned over to approach. Approach continued vectors for runway 29R. Due to thunderstorms it was difficult turning towards the field. Approach said to hold on msp 110/40. Copilot was programming FMC and had trouble entering the proper data to hold at msp 110/40. Captain selected manual VOR and entered holding with the VOR vice FMC due to the short time frame involved. Aircraft entered holding after passing the holding fix. The glass cockpit requires sometime to enter the holding information. ATC should be aware of that requirement so enough warning can be given to the crew. Otherwise the crew will not be ready to enter holding on short notice.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B757 OVERSHOT HOLDING FIX BECAUSE THEY DID NOT GET THE FMC PROGRAMMED FOR THE UNEXPECTED HOLDING FIX IN SUFFICIENT TIME.
Narrative: ACFT WAS IN HOLDING PATTERN AT BITTY INTXN L TURN DUE TO TSTMS IN AREA. ACFT WAS VECTORED S AND TURNED OVER TO APCH. APCH CONTINUED VECTORS FOR RWY 29R. DUE TO TSTMS IT WAS DIFFICULT TURNING TOWARDS THE FIELD. APCH SAID TO HOLD ON MSP 110/40. COPLT WAS PROGRAMMING FMC AND HAD TROUBLE ENTERING THE PROPER DATA TO HOLD AT MSP 110/40. CAPT SELECTED MANUAL VOR AND ENTERED HOLDING WITH THE VOR VICE FMC DUE TO THE SHORT TIME FRAME INVOLVED. ACFT ENTERED HOLDING AFTER PASSING THE HOLDING FIX. THE GLASS COCKPIT REQUIRES SOMETIME TO ENTER THE HOLDING INFO. ATC SHOULD BE AWARE OF THAT REQUIREMENT SO ENOUGH WARNING CAN BE GIVEN TO THE CREW. OTHERWISE THE CREW WILL NOT BE READY TO ENTER HOLDING ON SHORT NOTICE.
