Narrative:

The summa-5 departure out of sea requires a climb to 9000 ft on the 158 degree right. Departure said to stop the climb at 5000 ft and pointed out traffic at 2 O'clock. She then said to climb to 8000 ft. Abruptly she said stop the climb at 6000 ft. Our climb rate was about 3000 FPM as we were instructed at 5500 ft, so we overshot by about 300 ft as our TCASII alerted 'traffic.' just then we noted a 767 at 10 O'clock (not 2 O'clock). We had been looking in the opposite direction. The 767 was at our altitude in an aggressive climb and banked towards our back (at our altitude, 6000 ft when we saw him). Due to the maneuvering of the other aircraft we never got within approximately 2000 ft. I called the supervisor on the ground and was told the 767 unexpectedly stopped his climb and caused the problem. The traffic we were told about at 2 O'clock was actually for the 767 about us. Our call signs sounded similar and my first officer and I both thought the 2 O'clock was for us. (We answered the call) so we both were looking out the opposite window.

Title: ALTDEV BY MLG ON CLB AS TCASII ALERT ACTIVATED.

Narrative: THE SUMMA-5 DEP OUT OF SEA REQUIRES A CLB TO 9000 FT ON THE 158 DEG R. DEP SAID TO STOP THE CLB AT 5000 FT AND POINTED OUT TFC AT 2 O'CLOCK. SHE THEN SAID TO CLB TO 8000 FT. ABRUPTLY SHE SAID STOP THE CLB AT 6000 FT. OUR CLB RATE WAS ABOUT 3000 FPM AS WE WERE INSTRUCTED AT 5500 FT, SO WE OVERSHOT BY ABOUT 300 FT AS OUR TCASII ALERTED 'TFC.' JUST THEN WE NOTED A 767 AT 10 O'CLOCK (NOT 2 O'CLOCK). WE HAD BEEN LOOKING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE 767 WAS AT OUR ALT IN AN AGGRESSIVE CLB AND BANKED TOWARDS OUR BACK (AT OUR ALT, 6000 FT WHEN WE SAW HIM). DUE TO THE MANEUVERING OF THE OTHER ACFT WE NEVER GOT WITHIN APPROX 2000 FT. I CALLED THE SUPVR ON THE GND AND WAS TOLD THE 767 UNEXPECTEDLY STOPPED HIS CLB AND CAUSED THE PROB. THE TFC WE WERE TOLD ABOUT AT 2 O'CLOCK WAS ACTUALLY FOR THE 767 ABOUT US. OUR CALL SIGNS SOUNDED SIMILAR AND MY FO AND I BOTH THOUGHT THE 2 O'CLOCK WAS FOR US. (WE ANSWERED THE CALL) SO WE BOTH WERE LOOKING OUT THE OPPOSITE WINDOW.
