Narrative:
We were IFR, night, in the clear. Given traffic 12 O'clock at FL280. We were at FL270. Called traffic in sight, after which we were cleared to FL290. During our climb TCASII gave a TA/RA to descend at 2500 FPM, we complied. We told ATC about our RA and asked them what altitude the traffic was at. Traffic admitted he was off his altitude. This is not the only time TCASII has saved the day. It's worth its weight in gold/lives saved! Supplemental information from acn 281327: I pushed over into descent as we matched the traffic displayed to the aircraft passing just off to our left side and above us. Due to visual confirmation of aircraft passing us I stopped descent at 26700 ft. Other aircraft showed only plus 500 ft as he went by, so he evidently went approximately 800 ft below his altitude very abruptly. The rest of the flight was uneventful.

Title: FLC OF AN MLG DSNDED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA RESULTING IN A NMAC.
Narrative: WE WERE IFR, NIGHT, IN THE CLR. GIVEN TFC 12 O'CLOCK AT FL280. WE WERE AT FL270. CALLED TFC IN SIGHT, AFTER WHICH WE WERE CLRED TO FL290. DURING OUR CLB TCASII GAVE A TA/RA TO DSND AT 2500 FPM, WE COMPLIED. WE TOLD ATC ABOUT OUR RA AND ASKED THEM WHAT ALT THE TFC WAS AT. TFC ADMITTED HE WAS OFF HIS ALT. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY TIME TCASII HAS SAVED THE DAY. IT'S WORTH ITS WT IN GOLD/LIVES SAVED! SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 281327: I PUSHED OVER INTO DSCNT AS WE MATCHED THE TFC DISPLAYED TO THE ACFT PASSING JUST OFF TO OUR L SIDE AND ABOVE US. DUE TO VISUAL CONFIRMATION OF ACFT PASSING US I STOPPED DSCNT AT 26700 FT. OTHER ACFT SHOWED ONLY PLUS 500 FT AS HE WENT BY, SO HE EVIDENTLY WENT APPROX 800 FT BELOW HIS ALT VERY ABRUPTLY. THE REST OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
