Narrative:
Descent in IMC to 5000 ft heading 330 degree vector to the final for runway 29R at tus encountered VMC at approximately 6000 ft and acquired runway 29R visually and informed controller thereof. Controller issued TA of 12 O'clock and 2 mi climbing VFR to 5500 ft. We were approximately 1/4 mi south of approach course with traffic on approach course climbing toward us. TCASII issued a TA immediately followed by a climbing RA. We responded accordingly and advised ATC. Traffic was acquired visually less than 1 mi and minus 300 ft. Controller issued a turn to break off approach and swing around for another visual approach. TCASII saved the day.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MLG STOPPED DSCNT AND CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA.
Narrative: DSCNT IN IMC TO 5000 FT HDG 330 DEG VECTOR TO THE FINAL FOR RWY 29R AT TUS ENCOUNTERED VMC AT APPROX 6000 FT AND ACQUIRED RWY 29R VISUALLY AND INFORMED CTLR THEREOF. CTLR ISSUED TA OF 12 O'CLOCK AND 2 MI CLBING VFR TO 5500 FT. WE WERE APPROX 1/4 MI S OF APCH COURSE WITH TFC ON APCH COURSE CLBING TOWARD US. TCASII ISSUED A TA IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A CLBING RA. WE RESPONDED ACCORDINGLY AND ADVISED ATC. TFC WAS ACQUIRED VISUALLY LESS THAN 1 MI AND MINUS 300 FT. CTLR ISSUED A TURN TO BREAK OFF APCH AND SWING AROUND FOR ANOTHER VISUAL APCH. TCASII SAVED THE DAY.
