Narrative:
Asked for permission to transit air traffic area, scottsdale, az, (class D airspace) sdl tower said ok and to report over airport. We flew over at 2600 ft not realizing sdl pattern was 2500 ft. Other aircraft reported. A near miss with us to tower -- we never saw other aircraft. Sdl tower said they had told us to maintain 3000 ft which we never heard. (I don't think they even communicated that to us). Guess we need to be more vigilant.
