Narrative:

While in cruise flight to southwest to a hospital in an EMS helicopter, mission was canceled and pilot turned toward class B airspace to return to base. Initially at 9 NM DME outside of class B airspace at 2500 ft MSL, upon completing turn pilot was now in class B and attempting to descend below 1900 ft MSL below class B. In this area of class B, 700 ft AGL must be maintained to be below 1900 ft MSL and clear of class B. Numerous towers and high wires also proliferate in this area. Captain attempted to communicate to first officer at controls but first officer was unfamiliar with these airspace restrs although DME was operable and first officer had been briefed numerous times of this sensitive airspace.
