Narrative:

While patrolling north of bna the tower continued to give me TA's after I had left the air traffic area. A blue/white citabria which was doing traffic watch passed off my right wing. I didn't see the citabria until he was 5 seconds away. I don't believe the other pilot saw me since he/she did not change his flight path or rock their wings. As usual blame can be put on both sides. I should have seen the other aircraft earlier, but I was patrolling in a congested area (lots of ground clutter) and was not watching as much for traffic as I should have. There is also the tendency to relax the traffic scan since I was getting radar advisories. But I also think ATC relaxed since I was out of the air traffic area. I expected the tower to either terminate service or handoff to approach when I left the air traffic area. This usually occurs, but this time I think they may have forgotten about me. The traffic level was light to moderate at bna, they were not in an air carrier airlines rush.
