Narrative:
Salt lake city approach area, ILS 34 downwind. 8000 ft MSL, speed 170 KIAS (assigned), heading 175 degrees (assigned). GPWS warning 'too low terrain' at 8000 ft MSL so I climbed to approximately 9000 ft MSL to silence the warning (SOP for my carrier). I descended back to 8000 ft MSL when assured by the approach control that there was no danger from terrain in that area. Second warning 'too low terrain' while again at 8000 ft MSL 3-4 mi southeast of first warning. This warning stopped at approximately 8300 ft MSL. During the second warning, while turning, I saw the ground through a broken cloud deck well below my altitude. I believe that the GPWS malfunctioned but investigation of this incident may discover some other problem area.

Title: FLC OF AN MLG CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A GPWS WARNING DURING A VECTOR HDG FOR AN APCH.
Narrative: SALT LAKE CITY APCH AREA, ILS 34 DOWNWIND. 8000 FT MSL, SPD 170 KIAS (ASSIGNED), HDG 175 DEGS (ASSIGNED). GPWS WARNING 'TOO LOW TERRAIN' AT 8000 FT MSL SO I CLBED TO APPROX 9000 FT MSL TO SILENCE THE WARNING (SOP FOR MY CARRIER). I DSNDED BACK TO 8000 FT MSL WHEN ASSURED BY THE APCH CTL THAT THERE WAS NO DANGER FROM TERRAIN IN THAT AREA. SECOND WARNING 'TOO LOW TERRAIN' WHILE AGAIN AT 8000 FT MSL 3-4 MI SE OF FIRST WARNING. THIS WARNING STOPPED AT APPROX 8300 FT MSL. DURING THE SECOND WARNING, WHILE TURNING, I SAW THE GND THROUGH A BROKEN CLOUD DECK WELL BELOW MY ALT. I BELIEVE THAT THE GPWS MALFUNCTIONED BUT INVESTIGATION OF THIS INCIDENT MAY DISCOVER SOME OTHER PROB AREA.
