Narrative:
On descent into cle deployed slats and got slat asymmetry light and a rolled right. Retracted slats, got out the book, tried 'em again. Slats deployed with blinking slat extend light. Made a circle over cle while we troubleshot. Came around for the approach, put the gear handle down and nothing happened! Gear didn't extend and neither red nor green lights illuminated. Also, when flaps were lowered flap gauge didn't show flap movement. It was late night, dark, snowy, at the end of a 14 hour day. As we circled the field the first officer read the book and was confused as this condition was described nowhere. I happened to look at the hydraulic gauges and saw they were in low. Told first officer to put 'em to high and everything worked like douglas designed. First officer had missed it on approach check and when reading checklist. We were tired, distracted, hurried by our hour delay at departure point for nothing. Took me 3 circles of the airport to figure it out.
