Narrative:
Upon entering traffic pattern of newport news airport and at 'gear down' selection aircraft landing gear showed 2 green lights (down and locked) and 1 red gear unsafe light (right landing gear). Abandoning the approach to try and rectify situation. We followed normal procedures by referring to the abnormal section of pilot's handbook and followed the prescribed procedure for this type of abnormal. Being unable to get the light extinguished, we diverted to norfolk to take full advantage of longer runway, better crash fire rescue equipment facility, and maintenance facility. I personally checked the landing gear down lock indication by using the aircraft 'periscope' to make the determination and gear showed down and locked. After a 'low-pass at norfolk for further confirmation of gear status, we were told gear was down. We circled to land. Briefed the flight attendants and passenger and proceeded to land without incident. We stopped the aircraft on the runway had mechanics 'pin' the gear down and aircraft proceeded to the gate under its own power.

Narrative: UPON ENTERING TFC PATTERN OF NEWPORT NEWS ARPT AND AT 'GEAR DOWN' SELECTION ACFT LNDG GEAR SHOWED 2 GREEN LIGHTS (DOWN AND LOCKED) AND 1 RED GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT (R LNDG GEAR). ABANDONING THE APCH TO TRY AND RECTIFY SIT. WE FOLLOWED NORMAL PROCS BY REFERRING TO THE ABNORMAL SECTION OF PLT'S HANDBOOK AND FOLLOWED THE PRESCRIBED PROC FOR THIS TYPE OF ABNORMAL. BEING UNABLE TO GET THE LIGHT EXTINGUISHED, WE DIVERTED TO NORFOLK TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF LONGER RWY, BETTER CFR FACILITY, AND MAINT FACILITY. I PERSONALLY CHKED THE LNDG GEAR DOWN LOCK INDICATION BY USING THE ACFT 'PERISCOPE' TO MAKE THE DETERMINATION AND GEAR SHOWED DOWN AND LOCKED. AFTER A 'LOW-PASS AT NORFOLK FOR FURTHER CONFIRMATION OF GEAR STATUS, WE WERE TOLD GEAR WAS DOWN. WE CIRCLED TO LAND. BRIEFED THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX AND PROCEEDED TO LAND WITHOUT INCIDENT. WE STOPPED THE ACFT ON THE RWY HAD MECHS 'PIN' THE GEAR DOWN AND ACFT PROCEEDED TO THE GATE UNDER ITS OWN PWR.
