Narrative:
The incident occurred on a VFR flight from alb to orh. Approximately 13 NM northwest of orh, I contacted orh tower to obtain permission to enter class D airspace to land. The tower responded with what I thought to hear, 'enter left downwind for runway 33 at midfield.' I did enter a left downwind at midfield, turned base and final, and landed. Upon taxiing off the runway the tower advised me that I had landed without a clearance. Upon reflection of the incident, I believe the tower said, 'to enter left downwind for runway 33, report at midfield.' I apparently had not made the distinction between 'at' and 'report,' causing me to think I had permission to land. A contributing factor, I believe, was my lack of VFR flying time in the last 90 days (as compared to much more active flying) and my flts are usually by an IFR flight plan on cross country trips. I have become unfamiliar with ATC instructions, and intentions, on VFR flts. Safety was not compromised.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT ASSUMED BY CTLR PHRASEOLOGY THAT HE WAS CLRED TO LAND, AND LANDED AT A PRIMARY ARPT IN CLASS D AIRSPACE WITHOUT A LNDG CLRNC.
Narrative: THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON A VFR FLT FROM ALB TO ORH. APPROX 13 NM NW OF ORH, I CONTACTED ORH TWR TO OBTAIN PERMISSION TO ENTER CLASS D AIRSPACE TO LAND. THE TWR RESPONDED WITH WHAT I THOUGHT TO HEAR, 'ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 33 AT MIDFIELD.' I DID ENTER A L DOWNWIND AT MIDFIELD, TURNED BASE AND FINAL, AND LANDED. UPON TAXIING OFF THE RWY THE TWR ADVISED ME THAT I HAD LANDED WITHOUT A CLRNC. UPON REFLECTION OF THE INCIDENT, I BELIEVE THE TWR SAID, 'TO ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 33, RPT AT MIDFIELD.' I APPARENTLY HAD NOT MADE THE DISTINCTION BTWN 'AT' AND 'RPT,' CAUSING ME TO THINK I HAD PERMISSION TO LAND. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR, I BELIEVE, WAS MY LACK OF VFR FLYING TIME IN THE LAST 90 DAYS (AS COMPARED TO MUCH MORE ACTIVE FLYING) AND MY FLTS ARE USUALLY BY AN IFR FLT PLAN ON XCOUNTRY TRIPS. I HAVE BECOME UNFAMILIAR WITH ATC INSTRUCTIONS, AND INTENTIONS, ON VFR FLTS. SAFETY WAS NOT COMPROMISED.
