Narrative:
The first officer retrieved clearance from ZNY while on ground at hpn. The first officer stated that we were to contact center after departure. We departed runway 34 at hpn. I was PNF. I made contact with ZNY. The center informed us that we had not been released from hpn. He said that there was no conflict and asked us to identify. I explained the misunderstood clearance to the controller. He then controled us uneventfully to hvn. The expedited departure from hpn was the main contributing factor. I was not present on frequency when the first officer retrieved the clearance. Also the confusion in the given clearance, ie, he heard contact center after departure. It should have been contact center prior to departure. A more vigilant watch on clearance read-back. Also, I will no longer accept a clearance from my first officer without my being on the radio to listen for the clearance as well. Fatigue also played a minor role. We were finishing a long duty day.

Title: UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE. TKOF WITHOUT AN IFR CLRNC.
Narrative: THE FO RETRIEVED CLRNC FROM ZNY WHILE ON GND AT HPN. THE FO STATED THAT WE WERE TO CONTACT CTR AFTER DEP. WE DEPARTED RWY 34 AT HPN. I WAS PNF. I MADE CONTACT WITH ZNY. THE CTR INFORMED US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN RELEASED FROM HPN. HE SAID THAT THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND ASKED US TO IDENT. I EXPLAINED THE MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC TO THE CTLR. HE THEN CTLED US UNEVENTFULLY TO HVN. THE EXPEDITED DEP FROM HPN WAS THE MAIN CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. I WAS NOT PRESENT ON FREQ WHEN THE FO RETRIEVED THE CLRNC. ALSO THE CONFUSION IN THE GIVEN CLRNC, IE, HE HEARD CONTACT CTR AFTER DEP. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONTACT CTR PRIOR TO DEP. A MORE VIGILANT WATCH ON CLRNC READ-BACK. ALSO, I WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT A CLRNC FROM MY FO WITHOUT MY BEING ON THE RADIO TO LISTEN FOR THE CLRNC AS WELL. FATIGUE ALSO PLAYED A MINOR ROLE. WE WERE FINISHING A LONG DUTY DAY.
