Narrative:
Departed runway 33 at lawrence, ks, VFR, and contacted center to get an IFR clearance to dca. Lawrence is situated approximately 13 NM west of the kansas city class B airspace which extends from 4000-8000 ft MSL closest to lawrence. Instead of departing the airport, which is uncontrolled, with standard left hand traffic, the PF made a right turn eastbound and climbed on course toward iiu. Left hand traffic would have given us time to climb above the class B airspace, but the right turn greatly reduced our chances of climbing over the class B. Center was very slow in giving us a clearance and I fear we penetrated the class B without a clearance, or a pointout by center to kansas city approach. This is just another case of rushing and using non standard procedures.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLRNC ON REQUEST. UNAUTH UNCOORD PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE BY CPR JET. CLBING DEP TFC.
Narrative: DEPARTED RWY 33 AT LAWRENCE, KS, VFR, AND CONTACTED CTR TO GET AN IFR CLRNC TO DCA. LAWRENCE IS SITUATED APPROX 13 NM W OF THE KANSAS CITY CLASS B AIRSPACE WHICH EXTENDS FROM 4000-8000 FT MSL CLOSEST TO LAWRENCE. INSTEAD OF DEPARTING THE ARPT, WHICH IS UNCTLED, WITH STANDARD L HAND TFC, THE PF MADE A R TURN EBOUND AND CLBED ON COURSE TOWARD IIU. L HAND TFC WOULD HAVE GIVEN US TIME TO CLB ABOVE THE CLASS B AIRSPACE, BUT THE R TURN GREATLY REDUCED OUR CHANCES OF CLBING OVER THE CLASS B. CTR WAS VERY SLOW IN GIVING US A CLRNC AND I FEAR WE PENETRATED THE CLASS B WITHOUT A CLRNC, OR A POINTOUT BY CTR TO KANSAS CITY APCH. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER CASE OF RUSHING AND USING NON STANDARD PROCS.
