Narrative:

Was doing a simulated engine out approach and hit a pole in open field. Wind was from the west, sun was there also. Didn't see pole. The engine didn't run right afterwards, needed to land in field. No further damage. Also wasn't sure if this was a rptable incident. The damage was to the cowling intake port on engine. Scraped the bottom of airplane and exhaust, put hole in rear passenger compartment. Cause of problem was I should not have carried the approach down that low, and the sun in our eyes.
