Narrative:
During engine start we had to perform irregular engine start procedure. During taxi out I had to leave ATC frequency resolve irregular procedure with line maintenance. This lead to an extra heavy workload on taxi out. I also lost situtational awareness with ATC. Upon rejoining the captain on ATC frequency we were cleared for takeoff runway 22L. (Approximately 8000 ft runway). The captain entered runway at first intersection (approximately 500 ft from end). This was due to misunderstanding with ATC. Ord tower pointed out the mistake and asked for our intentions. I recommended we back taxi to the end of runway 22L. The captain decided takeoff from that intersection. His reasons were as follows. Runway limit weight 239000 pounds. Our actual weight 208000 pounds. Leaving us 30000 pounds to spare. Because we were on the runway I felt I had limited time to discuss this with the captain!!! I decided to devote my attention to helping him perform the safest possible takeoff. However I feel we should have back taxied to end of runway 22L. The takeoff was uneventful.
