Narrative:

I was cleared for an approach into petaluma. The procedure had a holding pattern in lieu of a procedure turn. Instead of executing the entry procedure, I started the approach. I did this because I did not know that it was mandatory to do the entry once cleared for the approach. This could have been prevented if I knew my instrument procedures better. This occurrence has shown me the importance in staying in the books, even after a chkride is complete.
