Narrative:
Route clearance was not available on ACARS. Clearance delivery was saturated so captain elected to get the clearance during taxi. During taxi, I finally got clearance while captain covered ramp and ground frequencys. After I copied the clearance, I picked up the flight plan and checked the clearance against the waypoints. I failed to detect an airway change from J66 to J42 between txk and mem. At txk, the FMS directed the aircraft to follow J66. After the turn, ATC queried our route. I told him we were on J66. He said we should be on J42 and then cleared us direct to mem. I then checked the clearance and discovered my error. Two points to correct this situation and prevent its recurrence. One point, both pilots should always copy the clearance, and the route should always be checked against the route description at top of flight plan, not the waypoints.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEV FROM CLRNC RTE -- ACR CREW MISREAD CLRNC AND ARTCC RADAR CTLR INTERVENED AND STRAIGHTENED EVERYTHING OUT FOR THEM.
Narrative: RTE CLRNC WAS NOT AVAILABLE ON ACARS. CLRNC DELIVERY WAS SATURATED SO CAPT ELECTED TO GET THE CLRNC DURING TAXI. DURING TAXI, I FINALLY GOT CLRNC WHILE CAPT COVERED RAMP AND GND FREQS. AFTER I COPIED THE CLRNC, I PICKED UP THE FLT PLAN AND CHKED THE CLRNC AGAINST THE WAYPOINTS. I FAILED TO DETECT AN AIRWAY CHANGE FROM J66 TO J42 BTWN TXK AND MEM. AT TXK, THE FMS DIRECTED THE ACFT TO FOLLOW J66. AFTER THE TURN, ATC QUERIED OUR RTE. I TOLD HIM WE WERE ON J66. HE SAID WE SHOULD BE ON J42 AND THEN CLRED US DIRECT TO MEM. I THEN CHKED THE CLRNC AND DISCOVERED MY ERROR. TWO POINTS TO CORRECT THIS SIT AND PREVENT ITS RECURRENCE. ONE POINT, BOTH PLTS SHOULD ALWAYS COPY THE CLRNC, AND THE RTE SHOULD ALWAYS BE CHKED AGAINST THE RTE DESCRIPTION AT TOP OF FLT PLAN, NOT THE WAYPOINTS.
