Narrative:
I was captain (PNF) on airlines flight dtw-mia. ZMA put us on a 160 degree heading to intercept the collier 4 (cce.4) STAR into mia. (We were north of rsw on J-75). First officer (PF) set his HSI on 110 degree to intercept cce.4 arrival east of cce (collier county, now cypress). I was busy copying ATIS, calling company in mia, doing descent check and saying good-bye to passenger. He failed to reset his VOR to cce, and I failed to confirm this due to heavy workload. Instead of intercepting the cce.4 east of cce as cleared, we intercepted the 100 degree east of rsw. ZMA caught our error and gave us a heading into mia approach airspace. No traffic conflicts apparent. It was near midnight and both of us were very tired. Both of us were very embarrassed by the incident. We both try to operate a professional flight deck. Unfortunately, I feel that fatigue and a high workload at the wrong time helped 'murphy's law' claim another pair of victims.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MLG TUNED IN THE WRONG VOR DURING DSCNT RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION AND AMENDED CLRNC DUE TRACK DEV.
Narrative: I WAS CAPT (PNF) ON AIRLINES FLT DTW-MIA. ZMA PUT US ON A 160 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE COLLIER 4 (CCE.4) STAR INTO MIA. (WE WERE N OF RSW ON J-75). FO (PF) SET HIS HSI ON 110 DEG TO INTERCEPT CCE.4 ARR E OF CCE (COLLIER COUNTY, NOW CYPRESS). I WAS BUSY COPYING ATIS, CALLING COMPANY IN MIA, DOING DSCNT CHK AND SAYING GOOD-BYE TO PAX. HE FAILED TO RESET HIS VOR TO CCE, AND I FAILED TO CONFIRM THIS DUE TO HVY WORKLOAD. INSTEAD OF INTERCEPTING THE CCE.4 E OF CCE AS CLRED, WE INTERCEPTED THE 100 DEG E OF RSW. ZMA CAUGHT OUR ERROR AND GAVE US A HDG INTO MIA APCH AIRSPACE. NO TFC CONFLICTS APPARENT. IT WAS NEAR MIDNIGHT AND BOTH OF US WERE VERY TIRED. BOTH OF US WERE VERY EMBARRASSED BY THE INCIDENT. WE BOTH TRY TO OPERATE A PROFESSIONAL FLT DECK. UNFORTUNATELY, I FEEL THAT FATIGUE AND A HIGH WORKLOAD AT THE WRONG TIME HELPED 'MURPHY'S LAW' CLAIM ANOTHER PAIR OF VICTIMS.
