Narrative:
Air carrier X descending into cug approaching the milan arrival. My first officer had done most of his flying in southern climates and we were discussing icing conditions. He was working the radios at the time. At the time we were at 15000 ft. There was an air carrier Y on the frequency at the same time. The air carrier Y was cleared to 11000 ft, but my first officer answered the call and took the clearance. We then started our descent. At about 14300 ft the air carrier Y flight quizzed the controller about who actually was cleared to 11000 ft. The controller advised him that it was their air carrier Y flight. He then advised us to maintain 14000 ft, and stated there was no conflict. This was in an area where our flts on this arrival are usually cleared to 11000 ft for the arrival. Once again similar call signs and expecting a clearance caused an altitude deviation.

Title: FLC OF AN LTT RESPONDED TO THE WRONG CALL SIGN RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION TO STOP THEIR DSCNT.
Narrative: ACR X DSNDING INTO CUG APCHING THE MILAN ARR. MY FO HAD DONE MOST OF HIS FLYING IN SOUTHERN CLIMATES AND WE WERE DISCUSSING ICING CONDITIONS. HE WAS WORKING THE RADIOS AT THE TIME. AT THE TIME WE WERE AT 15000 FT. THERE WAS AN ACR Y ON THE FREQ AT THE SAME TIME. THE ACR Y WAS CLRED TO 11000 FT, BUT MY FO ANSWERED THE CALL AND TOOK THE CLRNC. WE THEN STARTED OUR DSCNT. AT ABOUT 14300 FT THE ACR Y FLT QUIZZED THE CTLR ABOUT WHO ACTUALLY WAS CLRED TO 11000 FT. THE CTLR ADVISED HIM THAT IT WAS THEIR ACR Y FLT. HE THEN ADVISED US TO MAINTAIN 14000 FT, AND STATED THERE WAS NO CONFLICT. THIS WAS IN AN AREA WHERE OUR FLTS ON THIS ARR ARE USUALLY CLRED TO 11000 FT FOR THE ARR. ONCE AGAIN SIMILAR CALL SIGNS AND EXPECTING A CLRNC CAUSED AN ALTDEV.
