Narrative:
While approaching bna from the southwest, I misidented the assigned runway. I was cleared for visual approach to runway 2L, when 5 mi southwest, at 1500 ft AGL, heading 090 degrees. I have made this approach several times and had the ILS frequency tuned in, and still managed to fly the aircraft down to 1/2 mi final on runway 2C before realizing my error! I then executed a go around and landed on runway 2L without further incident. The low sun angle and haze made runway 2C stand out visually much better than runway 2L. Tower also caught my error on short final, and directed a go around as I was pushing the power up, and retracting the landing gear.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: VISUAL APCH TO WRONG RWY. GAR FOLLOWED BY NORMAL LNDG ON CORRECT RWY.
Narrative: WHILE APCHING BNA FROM THE SW, I MISIDENTED THE ASSIGNED RWY. I WAS CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH TO RWY 2L, WHEN 5 MI SW, AT 1500 FT AGL, HDG 090 DEGS. I HAVE MADE THIS APCH SEVERAL TIMES AND HAD THE ILS FREQ TUNED IN, AND STILL MANAGED TO FLY THE ACFT DOWN TO 1/2 MI FINAL ON RWY 2C BEFORE REALIZING MY ERROR! I THEN EXECUTED A GAR AND LANDED ON RWY 2L WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE LOW SUN ANGLE AND HAZE MADE RWY 2C STAND OUT VISUALLY MUCH BETTER THAN RWY 2L. TWR ALSO CAUGHT MY ERROR ON SHORT FINAL, AND DIRECTED A GAR AS I WAS PUSHING THE PWR UP, AND RETRACTING THE LNDG GEAR.
