Narrative:
I was on the 45 degree approach to left downwind of runway in use. I reported 'on the 45 degree for left downwind runway X.' right after this, someone reported 'entering left downwind runway X.' I started looking all around but assuming he also was on the 45 degree (he actually was crosswind turning downwind), my invalid assumption as to his location was due to my always reporting where I am, especially when I'm crosswind, to avoid this situation. Others I know and hear also do this. I usually do ask someone where he/she is if there could be a problem. I'll always do this now! I was following a friend who had a faster plane and felt some pressure not to keep him waiting. I most remember that uncontrolled airports in georgia are much more 'free-for-alls' than in massachusetts, which I left a yr ago.
