Narrative:
I had landed at kalamazoo and asked tower for a taxi-back and to pick up my IFR clearance to grr (grand rapids). Tower gave me a taxi route to depart on runway 9. I concurred and the tower gave me my clearance. While taxiing, the tower asked if I would be ready at the end. I replied yes. When I reached the end 30 seconds later, tower cleared me for immediate takeoff. So I began adding power while taking the immediate takeoff from runway 5. Runways 9 and 5 have the same overrun on displaced threshold pad. When in a hurry to depart, I took runway 5 which is a little further of a left turn off the hold short line than is runway 9. I had cleared the area for traffic and runway 5 was clear and the takeoff was uneventful. The tower made no comment after departure. I think the contributing problems are poor signage, my unfamiliarity with the flown aircraft as my job is flying a turbo-propeller with 2 crew membrs. When the time came to take an immediate, the magnetic runway heading was not crosschecked with the directional gyroscope, which was not set prior to takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TKOF WRONG RWY.
Narrative: I HAD LANDED AT KALAMAZOO AND ASKED TWR FOR A TAXI-BACK AND TO PICK UP MY IFR CLRNC TO GRR (GRAND RAPIDS). TWR GAVE ME A TAXI RTE TO DEPART ON RWY 9. I CONCURRED AND THE TWR GAVE ME MY CLRNC. WHILE TAXIING, THE TWR ASKED IF I WOULD BE READY AT THE END. I REPLIED YES. WHEN I REACHED THE END 30 SECONDS LATER, TWR CLRED ME FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF. SO I BEGAN ADDING PWR WHILE TAKING THE IMMEDIATE TKOF FROM RWY 5. RWYS 9 AND 5 HAVE THE SAME OVERRUN ON DISPLACED THRESHOLD PAD. WHEN IN A HURRY TO DEPART, I TOOK RWY 5 WHICH IS A LITTLE FURTHER OF A L TURN OFF THE HOLD SHORT LINE THAN IS RWY 9. I HAD CLRED THE AREA FOR TFC AND RWY 5 WAS CLR AND THE TKOF WAS UNEVENTFUL. THE TWR MADE NO COMMENT AFTER DEP. I THINK THE CONTRIBUTING PROBS ARE POOR SIGNAGE, MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE FLOWN ACFT AS MY JOB IS FLYING A TURBO-PROP WITH 2 CREW MEMBRS. WHEN THE TIME CAME TO TAKE AN IMMEDIATE, THE MAGNETIC RWY HDG WAS NOT XCHKED WITH THE DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE, WHICH WAS NOT SET PRIOR TO TKOF.
