Narrative:
Washington approach vectored us for a visual approach at gai. Minimum vectoring altitude was 2000 ft. At that altitude, we were almost out of the bases and had occasional ground contact. Approach advised that they could vector us no lower, and would have to vector us for a VOR approach. We already had the approach set up, and were on the final approach course, inside the FAF, 'filix' for VOR runway 14 at gai. Approach authorized us to descend lower. Apparently, we had either idented filix late, or had a high ground speed, or both. Approach informed us that we were south, past the airport, and directed a left climbing turn. At that time, we were in VMC looking for the airport. We climbed back into IMC and opted to divert to bwi.

Title: PLT FAILED TO EXECUTE A MISSED APCH PROC UPON ARR AT THE MISSED APCH POINT. A R-SEAT PAX (RPTR) HOLDING CFI CREDENTIALS, CLAIMS THAT FAILURE WAS RELATED TO LATE IDENT OF FAF.
Narrative: WASHINGTON APCH VECTORED US FOR A VISUAL APCH AT GAI. MINIMUM VECTORING ALT WAS 2000 FT. AT THAT ALT, WE WERE ALMOST OUT OF THE BASES AND HAD OCCASIONAL GND CONTACT. APCH ADVISED THAT THEY COULD VECTOR US NO LOWER, AND WOULD HAVE TO VECTOR US FOR A VOR APCH. WE ALREADY HAD THE APCH SET UP, AND WERE ON THE FINAL APCH COURSE, INSIDE THE FAF, 'FILIX' FOR VOR RWY 14 AT GAI. APCH AUTHORIZED US TO DSND LOWER. APPARENTLY, WE HAD EITHER IDENTED FILIX LATE, OR HAD A HIGH GND SPD, OR BOTH. APCH INFORMED US THAT WE WERE S, PAST THE ARPT, AND DIRECTED A L CLBING TURN. AT THAT TIME, WE WERE IN VMC LOOKING FOR THE ARPT. WE CLBED BACK INTO IMC AND OPTED TO DIVERT TO BWI.
