Narrative:
On taxi out to runway 22R and 22L (needed runway 22L for weight), original spot approximately #8 for takeoff. When aircraft in front was cleared to position on runway 22R, instructions for 3 were given in one fast continuous statement including - clearance for 'aircraft on runway 22R to takeoff, next aircraft position and hold but pull up to 1ST intersection for hold' and let us taxi behind, for us to 'taxi to runway 22L and call when ready.' during some portion of this taxi to runway 22L, I queried my copilot as to our instructions thinking I may have missed something because I did not hear tower say 'hold short,' nor my copilot respond 'hold short' but I had not turned on our anti- collision lights or autothrottle yet - my automatic response to 'position and hold.' my copilot assured me 'position and hold.' later conversation indicated he thought tower meant position when they did not say 'hold short,' and part of the tower transmission was missed by me as I told flight attendant 'prepare for takeoff' as the tower started it's transmission clearing aircraft on runway 22R. I should have double checked. Tower responded we were not cleared on the runway, but traffic 3 out and switched to runway 22 for landing. A later call to boston tower (via telephone), said 'no problem, they used bad verbiage and there was no conflict.' added comment not be connected to the above. One of the biggest changes in aviation in past 5 yrs is the increase in 'speed talk.' a missed communication takes 3 times the amount of time to correct as a single understandable one takes to be understood and responded to. Also ATC transmitters are really outdated and sometimes difficult to understand (backgnd noise, etc) pilot to pilot is very clear.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTH UNCOORD RWY ENTRY OP.
Narrative: ON TAXI OUT TO RWY 22R AND 22L (NEEDED RWY 22L FOR WT), ORIGINAL SPOT APPROX #8 FOR TKOF. WHEN ACFT IN FRONT WAS CLRED TO POS ON RWY 22R, INSTRUCTIONS FOR 3 WERE GIVEN IN ONE FAST CONTINUOUS STATEMENT INCLUDING - CLRNC FOR 'ACFT ON RWY 22R TO TKOF, NEXT ACFT POS AND HOLD BUT PULL UP TO 1ST INTXN FOR HOLD' AND LET US TAXI BEHIND, FOR US TO 'TAXI TO RWY 22L AND CALL WHEN READY.' DURING SOME PORTION OF THIS TAXI TO RWY 22L, I QUERIED MY COPLT AS TO OUR INSTRUCTIONS THINKING I MAY HAVE MISSED SOMETHING BECAUSE I DID NOT HEAR TWR SAY 'HOLD SHORT,' NOR MY COPLT RESPOND 'HOLD SHORT' BUT I HAD NOT TURNED ON OUR ANTI- COLLISION LIGHTS OR AUTOTHROTTLE YET - MY AUTO RESPONSE TO 'POS AND HOLD.' MY COPLT ASSURED ME 'POS AND HOLD.' LATER CONVERSATION INDICATED HE THOUGHT TWR MEANT POS WHEN THEY DID NOT SAY 'HOLD SHORT,' AND PART OF THE TWR XMISSION WAS MISSED BY ME AS I TOLD FLT ATTENDANT 'PREPARE FOR TKOF' AS THE TWR STARTED IT'S XMISSION CLRING ACFT ON RWY 22R. I SHOULD HAVE DOUBLE CHKED. TWR RESPONDED WE WERE NOT CLRED ON THE RWY, BUT TFC 3 OUT AND SWITCHED TO RWY 22 FOR LNDG. A LATER CALL TO BOSTON TWR (VIA TELEPHONE), SAID 'NO PROB, THEY USED BAD VERBIAGE AND THERE WAS NO CONFLICT.' ADDED COMMENT NOT BE CONNECTED TO THE ABOVE. ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHANGES IN AVIATION IN PAST 5 YRS IS THE INCREASE IN 'SPD TALK.' A MISSED COM TAKES 3 TIMES THE AMOUNT OF TIME TO CORRECT AS A SINGLE UNDERSTANDABLE ONE TAKES TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND RESPONDED TO. ALSO ATC XMITTERS ARE REALLY OUTDATED AND SOMETIMES DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND (BACKGND NOISE, ETC) PLT TO PLT IS VERY CLR.
