Narrative:
Received approach clearance and flew NDB DME runway 6 to brw (local time XA55 pm, WX 1200 ft scattered 1700 ft overcast 7 mi, airport was insight at 12 DME on the descent through 6000 ft. Taxied in and shutdown at XB01 pm. Fueled, got destination WX (ome) filed VFR flight plan through fai FSS, boarded aircraft started at XB30 pm, made traffic and advisory call before taxi. Taxied to runway 6 brw, called for a DVFR squawk, was told to receive code from zan. Departed, on VFR climb out when preceding traffic called clear of zone. Called fai FSS with time off and to activate plan. Monitored zan (135.3) and CTAF 123.6. Maintained VFR. At no time were we informed field was IFR. My personal observation was that the brw WX was VFR. We were able to maintain VFR throughout our climb out to 8500 ft and for the entire return trip to ome. Prior to reaching ADIZ south of OT2, contacted zan (119.2) and requested flight following, which we received, plus a squawk for the remaining part of the trip.
